Crisis of Coral Reefs Supporting Biodiversity

The total area of coral reefs worldwide is 600,000 km2, which represents only about 0.1% of the Earth's surface area. Despite this small percentage, coral reefs are home to approximately 25% of the world's marine fish species and around 90,000 species of organisms. Coral reefs are formed over a long period by coral-dominated organisms that constitute only 0.1% of the Earth's surface area. Fishing has been practiced in the surrounding areas for a long time, fostering a deep connection with people's lives.

Coral reefs create complex habitats, providing hiding places for small marine organisms. Additionally, the symbiotic relationship between coral and brown algae produces organic matter through photosynthesis, which serves as a food source for small marine animals and fish. Large fish and shrimp that feed on the small organisms inhabiting coral reefs also gather in these areas, resulting in diverse biological communities. Coral reefs play a crucial role as nurseries for a wide range of marine organisms.

Furthermore, coral reefs bring benefits not only to marine life but also to human livelihoods. Coral reefs, which are home to 25% of the world's marine fish species, provide diverse seafood resources, serving as a source of food for 500 million to 1 billion people worldwide. They also act as natural breakwaters, reducing the impact of high waves during typhoons. Beautiful coral reefs serve as tourist attractions and their rich ecosystems provide opportunities for cultural and environmental education.

However, the situation surrounding coral reefs has undergone significant changes in recent years. According to research reports, 58% of the world's coral reefs are threatened by human activities such as coastal development, overexploitation of biological resources, marine pollution, and soil erosion caused by deforestation and agricultural development. Additionally, large-scale bleaching caused by global warming and destruction due to typhoons, as well as damage caused by coral predators, have become causes of coral mortality, leading to the serious deterioration of coral reefs in various parts of the world.

Our Mission

Due to environmental stresses caused by human activities, including global warming, coral reefs have been declining and deteriorating. However, we believe that coral reefs, which are on the verge of crisis due to human involvement, can be protected and regenerated through human efforts. To achieve this, we consider it essential to raise awareness of the little-known ecosystems of coral reefs and the actual situation of their crisis. Understanding coral reefs is the first step towards participating in direct environmental activities to protect them.

Our NPO will provide information and promote awareness about the protection and regeneration of coral reefs. To restore coral reefs, we will engage in activities such as coral cultivation, support for planting activities in the sea, and fundraising both domestically and internationally.

In order to ensure that beautiful coral reefs are not lost even 100 years from now, we will consider and implement what we can do now, passing it on to future generations. We will expand this empathy through various media and call upon like-minded individuals who share the same goal.

About "Sangobatake“ Coral Farm

Mr. Koji Kinjo

Head of “Sangobatake” Coral Farm

"Coral Farm," led by Mr. Koji Kinjyo, is a small sea on land. It is Japan's largest coral farming facility capable of cultivating 300,000 coral colonies.

Through special collection permits, corals collected from the wild are propagated, and only the propagated corals are used for transplantation.

Mr. Kinjo employs a fixing method for farmed corals on rocky surfaces that does not involve the use of any chemicals. He embed dried gourds into the gaps for fixation.

Transplanted corals undergo approximately two years of growth and then begin to spawn.

The observation of spawned corals from the propagated corals after transplantation was the first of its kind in the world.
